Michael Hall explains how a fortuitous decision, in 1991, to investigate the action of rapamycin in yeast led to the discovery of protein complexes that serve as master regulators of cell growth. Hall’s research into TOR (target of rapamycin) led to his recognition with a 2017 Albert Lasker Award in Basic Medical Research.
