The April 4, 2023 Lasker Lessons in Leadership featured Harvey J. Alter, Scientist Emeritus, Transfusion Medicine Department, NIH Clinical Center. Alter won the 2000 Lasker Award for the discovery of the virus that causes hepatitis C and the development of screening methods that reduced the risk of blood transfusion-associated hepatitis in the US from 30% in 1970 to virtually zero in 2000.
In this lecture, he shares stories from the early years that helped shape his career, discusses how failure can lead to success, and talks about the past, present, and future approaches to screening for and treating of hepatitis C.
The Lessons in Leadership lectures are developed in collaboration with the International Biomedical Research Alliance and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Oxford-Cambridge Scholars Program.
