Bernard Fisher, a surgeon who transformed breast cancer treatment, has passed away at age 101. Dr. Fisher demonstrated that breast cancer could be effectively treated with lumpectomy or simple mastectomy followed by radiation, significantly reducing the use of more radical (and debiliating) mastectomy surgeries. His research also showed that chemotherapy reduced recurrance of breast cancer and extended patients’ lives. He received the Albert Lasker Clinical Medical Research Award in 1985 for his work.
